WALTER WELDON WOOD

Walter Weldon Wood, 81, passed from this life on March 14, 2024, at his home in Dolores, CO surrounded by his loved ones.  He was born on July 9, 1942, in Seagraves, TX to Walter E. Wood and Gladys (Bolding) Wood.  He was the youngest of four children and the only boy.

He met the love of his life, Wanda Louise Carlile, in 1962 in Andrews, TX.  They were married in Aztec, NM on April 23, 1963.  He was a devoted husband and father for 60 years, one month shy of 61, and was never hesitant about telling anybody that his “Louie” was the best.

Weldon enjoyed spending time with his family, reading, tinkering on projects around the house as well as on his antique car collection. He also enjoyed watching his favorite sports teams including the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Longhorns, Houston Astros, and loved watching NASCAR.  One of his favorite family pastimes was to “oosle”.    He'd put his family in the car and drive around with no destination with the sole purpose of seeing what there was to see.   Weldon provided a home to any child in need.  It didn't matter if that child was related, his home was always open.

He had a long career in construction which included over 20 years as a Superintendent/Project Manager for Nielson’s, Inc.  He started his own company, Wood’s Construction, in 1995 where he remained until his retirement.  He took great pride in his work and enjoyed pointing various projects out to whoever was with him.

Weldon is survived by his wife, Wanda Wood of Dolores, CO; his children, Kristi Fitzgerald (Tony) of Lewis, CO, Kenneth Wood (Laurie) of Grand Junction, CO, Karon Noyes of Dolores, CO, Vonda Ward (Mitch) of Dolores, CO, and Terri Frederick of Dolores, CO.   Weldon also leaves behind 16 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren (two more on the way), and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters Jenniev Smith, Madonna Bradshaw, Ruthel Wilson, and nephew David Quisenberry.

Visitation will be held at Ertel Funeral Home on March 19, 2024 from 5pm to 7pm.  A service to honor Weldon's life will be held on March 20th, 2024, at 1:00 PM at Ertel Funeral Home in Cortez, CO with burial following at the Cortez Cemetery.
