Wallace Roy Evans

WALLACE ROY EVANS Wallace Roy Evans was born on October 27, 1928, in Kansas the son of Roy Vernon and Lena Laurena (Earhart) Evans. He passed away on Friday, November 26, 2004, at the Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez at the age of 76. Wally graduated from High School in 1946 at Omaha, Neb. and went on to attend Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University) graduating in 1950. Upon graduation Wally entered the U.S. Air Force in August 1951. He was a Radar Navigator Bombardier flying in both the B-47 and B-52’s during both the Korean Conflict, Vietnam War and the Cold War. His last crew assignment was with the 461st Bomb Wing out of Amarillo, Tex. He was awarded the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement while Participating in Aerial Flight in South East Asia on Nov. 30, 1970. This medal was awarded to those who successfully performed their mission and showed outstanding airmanship and courage during extremely hazardous conditions. He was later awarded the Meritorious Service Medal on May 31, 1973. Wally was awarded this honor for his outstanding professional skill, leadership, and ceaseless efforts resulting in major contributions to the Air Force warning and security programs. His innovative problem solving skills enabled the Air Force to significantly improve the warning and operation of vital special security systems. Upon his retirement in May 1973, Wally was an Intelligence Officer stationed in Germany. Returning to the U.S., he and his wife, Bettie, went into the Real Estate Business in Tucson, Ariz. Wally is survived by his friends; Jerry McEwen, Jacqulyn Nelson, Susan Jarocki, Charlie and Gwen Gustafson, John and Toni Root, Ned and Lucie Kerr, Mel and Edna Melerovich, Bill and Barbara Davies, Elizabeth Pacanowski, and Eileen Pickett. Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife, Bettie Coble Evans in 1991. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Wally remains will be placed in his niche next to his beloved wife at the Memorial Park East Mausoleum in Amarillo, Tex.
