Thomas Joseph Quintana

Thomas Joseph Quintana, known fondly by friends and family as “Sonny,” passed away peacefully in his home in Dolores, Colorado, on January 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on August 19, 1956, in Antonito, Colorado, to Jose Tomas Quintana and Mary Espinoza, Sonny was a man of many creative talents. An artist of various trades, he saw beauty in the world around him and expressed it through his work.

Sonny’s greatest joy was found in nature and with his family. Many of his favorite memories were made hiking in City Creek, Utah, where he shared his love for the outdoors with his children, teaching them the unique skill of hand-fishing. He was a man who appreciated the simple pleasures—listening to oldies, sharing a beer with lifelong friends, and being in the company of those he loved.

In 1980, on the West Side of Salt Lake City, Sonny met his lifelong partner, Maxine DeHerrera. Together, they built a life rooted in family and devotion.

Sonny is survived by Maxine and their three children: Seledon (Vanessa), Bernadette (Keith), Jose (Nicole)

He also leaves behind a legacy through his many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sonny came from a large, vibrant family and is survived by his siblings Loretta, Mitchell, Sheila, and Shelly. He joins his father, Jose, and his sisters, Vivian and Mary Emma, who preceded him in death.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Sonny will be held at Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque Church, located at 28 East Montezuma Avenue, Cortez, Colorado. The service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. A Rosary will be prayed prior to the service at 9:30 a.m. Father Soosai will officiate.
