Ona Lee "Toby" Johnson

ONA LEE 'TOBY' JOHNSON Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident, Ona Lee 'Toby' Johnson will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 21 at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Reverend Dave Guy will be officiating. Toby was born on August 10, 1924 in Fresno, California the daughter of Bernice and Elsie (Olivera) Moore. She passed away on Monday, July 19, 2004 at her home in Cortez. Toby was 79 years old. On January 7, 1942 in Santa Ana, Calif. Toby married Kenneth Robert Johnson. In 1957 they moved to Cortez. Toby worked as a waitress at many restaurants including the Muse, El Sombrero, and Hotel Cortez. Her biggest treasure was her family and her home. Toby also loved to travel with her husband Ken. Her beloved husband, Kenneth Johnson of Cortez; her children, Lee Sparks and husband, Gene of Grand Junction, Colo., and Russell Johnson and wife, Suzi of New Braunfels, Tex. survive Toby. She leaves her grandchildren, Michelle Thomas and husband, Jeremy Patton of San Diego, Calif., Jeff Sparks and wife, Angela of Longmont, Colo., and Scott Sparks and wife Brandi of Durango, Kelli Kessell and husband, Mike, and Jennifer Carter and husband, Tom; as well as her great-grandchildren, Kristyna and Mitchell Thomas, Colter and Abby Sparks, Hannah Sparks, and Rylan Carter. Her two sisters, Beverly Mikkelson of San Pedro, Calif., and Shirley Bender and husband, Leland of Fountain Valley, Calif. also survive Toby. Preceding her in death were her parents; and one brother and one sister. Memorial contributions can be made in Toby's name to Hospice of Montezuma, 1345 S. Broadway, Cortez, Colo. 81321. Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
