Milton Ernest Harless, affectionately known as "Papa," officially finished his chores and hung up his hat on December 31, 2025. Born in 1930, Milton famously "hit the ground running" because he had chores to do, and he spent the next 95 years getting after it. Always quick with a joke, story, or comeback, Milton could lighten any room with his wit and believed that a good story was meant to be told at least twice.
A proud Navy veteran, Milton believed in working hard and playing harder. Whether he was working in helium operations or for Montezuma County, he approached every task with a tenacity that some might call stubbornness. When the work was done, he could be found hunting, fishing, enjoying live music, playing games, or sharing a home-cooked meal with his family. His passion for life was infectious, and he leaves behind a legacy of outdooring, humor, and love for his family, friends, and caregivers. He is survived by his wife of forty-one years, Carol, and his children, Marlena, Steve, and Teresa, along with a flourishing lineage of seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. He is now enjoying a well-earned rest with his late sons, Kelly and Alan, and grandsons Wade and Desmond. His family and friends will forever cherish his spirit and humor. Papa didn’t just live life; he gave it a run for its money.
