Matthew was born January 24, 1966 in Ogden, Utah the son of Abilino Antonio Gallegos and Mary Jessie (Archuleta) Gallegos. He passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at Caring for Life Hospice Care Center in Huntsville, Alabama surrounded by family at the age of 58.

Matthew was a Cortez resident until joining the military in 1989, where he served in the United States Army for 22 years before retiring as a First Sergeant with an impressive service record and a bond of brotherhood to all those he served with in combat and in peace. Matthew’s excellent work history and leadership values placed him in a government contracted career working with Blackhawk helicopters at Redstone Arsenal Missile and Defense Command Center in Huntsville AL. Matthew was always a happy, smiling man, with a contagious laugh who loved to hunt, fish, ride motorcycles, travel and be around friends and family and never met a stranger. One of his greatest joys outside of caring for all of those around him was being a grandfather. Matthew was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all.

Surviving Matthew is his daughter, Jazmyn Montgomery (Hampton), his son-in-law, Robert (Cody) Montgomery, his granddaughter Kendra Powell of Farmington; his siblings Mark Gallegos (Carmela Martinez), John Gallegos (Dina Cervantez) and Debbie Gallegos Otero of Cortez, CO; Virginia Jones , Matilda (John) Gaddy, Christie (Eddie) Wiliams, Judy (Richard) Gafford of Texas; his stepfather Abel Martinez of Yuma Arizona, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
