Mary Ann Smith

Funeral services for Cortez resident Mary Ann Smith will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at Ertel Memorial Chapel in Cortez, CO. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery.
Mary was born February 19, 1927 in Cortez, CO the daughter of Roy Milton and Jennie Ellen (Short) Dennison. She passed away on Friday, February 11, 2022 at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez, CO at the age of 94.
Mary’s family lived in the Squaw Point community before moving to McPhee where Mary grew up and attended school. In 1945 Mary graduated from Dolores High School. She met John Smith upon his return from service in World War II. They were married on Jun 6, 1946 in Aztec, NM. From their union they created a family of 13 children. Mary enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, reading, crafts, being outdoors, and being with her family. Mary was seldom idle as she would also go out with her sisters to yard sales or she would be traveling for visits with family. When her husband John passed away in 1976, three months shy of their 30-year anniversary, she was alone to raise the 4 youngest children. For a short time in the 1980’s Mary worked at the Southwest Memorial Hospital cafeteria.
Surviving Mary are her children, Bobby Smith (Jackie) of Hiawatha, KS, Caron Salisbury of Cortez, CO, Leslie Decker of Commerce City, CO, Steven Smith of Commerce City, CO, Cindy Mack (Sam) of Sun City, CA, Penny Cadman (Chee) of Tucson, AZ, Roger Smith of Cortez, CO, Connie Clark (Buddy)of Cortez, CO, Ronnie Smith of Cortez, CO; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her spouse, John Robert Smith; and her children, Sharon Norris, Larry Smith, Ella Smith, and Donnie Smith; and her siblings, Homer Boyd, Lola Bain, Leroy Dennison, Violet Imm, Willie Rule, Joy Cash, and Alice Arsenault.
