A Celebration of Life for Joe Lee Mahaffey will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at the Elks Lodge in Cortez, Colorado.
Joe Mahaffey passed away peacefully at his home on July 5, 2026, at the age of 89.
Joe was born on April 30, 1937, in Cortez, Colorado, to Charlie D. Mahaffey and Bertha (Bradfield) Mahaffey. He grew up in southwestern Colorado alongside his two older brothers, Chuck and Gary, and was proud to be a third-generation member of a family deeply rooted in the area.
Joe graduated from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 1955 and went on to study metallurgical and chemical engineering at Colorado School of Mines and Arizona State University from 1955 to 1960. During a portion of that time, he worked as a laboratory technician for National Lead Company in Monticello, Utah, where he helped process uranium. In 1960, Joe joined the U.S. Army and served until his honorable discharge in 1966.
On August 30, 1962, Joe married the love of his life, Mary Reynolds. Together they built a life centered around family, hard work, and the farm they cherished. There, they raised their three children: Charles, Dana, and Scott.
After returning home to help on the family farm following his father's cancer diagnosis, Joe proudly devoted the rest of his life to agriculture. His grit, temperament, and commitment to the farming community earned him the respect of friends and neighbors. He owned and operated Mahaffey Warehouse in Yellow Jacket alongside his brothers. Together, they operated warehouse facilities in Dove Creek and Arriola, buying, selling, processing, storing, and hauling beans and wheat. Today, the Yellow Jacket warehouse remains in operational condition, standing as a lasting testament to Joe's perseverance and enduring legacy.
Joe's dedication extended well beyond his own fields. He was honored as Farmer of the Year in 1992. He served on the Board of Directors of the San Juan Basin Farm Bureau, including terms as Vice President from 1978 to 1981 and President from 1982 to 1983. He was also a member of the Farmers Telephone Board and the Pleasant View Fire District Board. Joe was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Dolores Water Conservancy District, where he served from 1993 to 2012, including as President of the Board from 2008 to 2012. His leadership and willingness to serve helped strengthen the agricultural community he loved.
Joe is survived by his children, Charles Mahaffey, Dana (Mat) Cox, and Scott (Katy) Mahaffey; six grandchildren: Joe Mahaffey, Tyrel (Whitney) Cox, Lane Cox, Jacey (Riley) Christensen, Anna Cox, and Nick Mahaffey; and five great-grandchildren: Alana, Jensen, and Quinn Cox, and Maizey and Hadley Christensen.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary; his parents, Charlie and Bertha Mahaffey; and his brothers, Chuck and Gary.
Joe's legacy lives on in the family he loved, the land he faithfully tended, and the community he helped build. His example of integrity, perseverance, and quiet strength will continue to inspire all who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in every harvest, every sunrise over the fields, and in the hearts of those fortunate enough to call him family, friend, or simply Grandpa Joe.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of Hospice of Montezuma County for their compassionate care and support. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Montezuma County.
