JANICE MARIE COLBERT

A celebration of life will be held for Janice at Boyle Park in Mancos, CO on Sunday, July 21, 2024 at 7:30 PM.

Janice (Jana) Colbert was born on August 23, 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was the daughter of Robert and Albina Houry. Janice passed away suddenly on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at her home in Mancos, Colorado at the age of 77.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Richard (Cedar) Colbert and nephew David Houry (Linda).

Janice was loved by her two brothers and their spouses, Bob and Darlene Houry, Kenn and Brenda Houry, her sister-in-law Melinda Lucum as well as her many nieces and nephews; Anna Colbert, Amber Freeman (Chris), Evan Colbert (Alanna), Paul Colbert (Courtney), David Houry(deceased)(Linda), Stephen Houry (Lauren), Brian Houry (Ally) and Jake Houry.

Janice graduated from Euclid High School in Euclid, Ohio in 1964 and went on to attend The Ohio State University to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973. She then moved to Seattle, Washington and later Colorado where she attended The University of Colorado to receive a Master of Arts degree in Education in 1987.

Janice was also known as “Jana” by her Mancos group of friends.

Janice was a beautiful, intelligent, loving and soft-spoken woman who loved music and was a member of The Mancos Valley Chorus for 14 years. She loved going out for Mexican food and talking for hours on end. She was a self-taught expert in the Dead Sea Scrolls and was an accomplished herbalist. She was deeply concerned about the direction in which our country’s been headed, yet optimistic about the future. She was a big fan of Film Noir with actresses Bette Davis and Katherine Hepburn. She enjoyed reading, gardening, woodworking and loved expressing her artistic creativity through coloring books.

A humorous anecdote: She loved to say Mancos was getting too big and that she thought she ought to move to a smaller town.
