Janice Elaine Barnett was born to Raymond and Phoebe Rose Neely on November 24,1942 in Cortez, CO. After graduating from Dolores County High School, she married Ronald Barnett on November 6, 1960.
Janice and Ron rarely stayed in one place for long and wherever they landed, Janice managed to make it a home for Ron and their three children Rick, Kerry and Cory. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
Janice was blessed with a true humanitarian spirit. Once her children were raised, she took in foster children, helped to bring college access into her rural community, was a key player in the opening of the “SEEKHAVEN Family Crisis Center” in Moab and helped the community by starting a housing authority. She put together and published her own grandfather’s memoirs from his wild, chaotic, cowboy life. In addition to these accomplishments, she was a hunter, gardener, librarian, dispatcher, Vista volunteer, firefighter, first responder, and writer.
Mom was a selfless and amazing woman, whose love and compassion for others was more than inspiring. She was not just a mother to us but to many others who called her “Mom”. Mom always listened, consoled and guided. She had a way of making any situation OK with her unconditional love, a hug and a smile. She was always there and you could feel her love no matter the distance.
On September 8, 2021 after years of battling Alzheimer’s, Janice passed away peacefully at her home with her daughter and grandchildren by her side.
Mom, there are no words to express how deeply you inspired all who encountered you, especially your children. You are forever in our hearts.
