HOWARD WAYNE HUGHES Funeral services for lifelong Cortez resident, Howard Wayne Hughes will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 31 at the Arriola Bible Church with Pastor Kent Slyter officiating. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery. Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75 will conduct Military Honors. Howard was born August 18, 1930 in Spearman, Texas the son of Milton and Gertrude LeMoyne (Howard) Hughes. He passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at the age of 77. A graduate of Dolores County High School in 1948, Howard joined the U.S. Army and proudly served his country. On Nov. 19, 1956 Howard married Rose Merle Payne in Albuquerque, N.M. Howard farmed beans and wheat and raised cattle. He was a member of the American Angus Association. Howard enjoyed hunting and fishing, and time spent with his family and taking his dogs for rides. Surviving Howard are his wife of 51 years, Rose Hughes of Cortez; three sons, Mark Hughes and wife, Debra of Ruidoso, N.M., John Hughes of Pleasant View, Colo., and Allen Hughes of Cortez; three grandchildren, Kari Lang, Keli Hughes, and Brandon Hughes; and two great grandchildren, Brittany Wyche and Tyler Singletary. His brother, James Hughes and wife, Janet of Clyde, N.Y.; and three sisters, Edna Myrl Spillar of Austin, Texas, June Posey and husband, Jim of Dove Creek, Colo., and Sue Johnson of Albuquerque, N.M. also survive Howard. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Ann Weese and Lorna Williams.
