Gregory Kevin Mahaffey, was born on December 23, 1958, and passed away on July 13, 2025 at the age of 66. It's likely he immediately asked for directions to a celestial dirt track and an unlimited supply of afterlife fuel.
He was a dedicated and loving husband to Tina Mahaffey, his forever partner in all adventures. He met her in 1999 and they were married 22 years. He was a devoted father to Matthew, Taryn, Kacee, and Laurel often “moving mountains” and cars for them.
Greg, as he was known to his loved ones, was a man of boundless passions and unwavering dedication to his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He was a man who truly never met a stranger and always saw the best in people. His infectious enthusiasm and open heart drew others to him, and he cultivated a wide circle of friends throughout his life. He possessed a deep love for music and animals, which brought him immense joy and comfort.
A true outdoorsman and adventurer, Greg found immense happiness on Lake Powell since 1963 when the lake was filling. Here he cherished spending time with his family and friends on a family houseboat. Greg was an avid off-roader, conquering trails like Imogene Pass, Hole in the Rock, the Canyonlands, and Ophir Pass, often leaving bewildered tourists in his dust. His adventurous spirit extended to the slopes, where he enjoyed snow skiing and probably attempted a few ill-advised jumps, and the water, where he was a waterskiing trickster, inventing new tricks.
Greg's love for anything with an engine was evident in his passion for cars of all kinds. He channeled this enthusiasm into racing his IMCA stock car “30 Something” at the local dirt track, a pursuit that undoubtedly brought him thrilling victories and lasting memories. That is until Tina began racing and kept him tied to a chair during her racing days. Greg also followed all series, demonstrating his broad interest in motorsports and never passed up an opportunity to take his kids and grandkids to a track, sharing his enthusiasm for the thrill of the race.
Beyond his adventurous pursuits, Greg was a master of fabrication. He possessed the rare ability to create and engineer anything he set his mind to, a testament to his ingenuity and skill. He could have built a spaceship out of spare parts and duct tape.
His devotion to his family was unwavering. Greg was known to pull out all the stops for his children and grandchildren, always putting their needs first.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a passion for life that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife and best friend for life, Tina Mahaffey. His children: son Matt, his wife Brooke and their boys, Tukker, Brekkon and Nokks; his daughter Taryn, her husband Bob, and their boys Ryder and Riley with his wife Marisa and his children Waylon and Everleigh. His daughter Kacee, her husband Ulysses with their boys Apollo and Kaius; and his daughter Laurel, her husband Brad and their children Nixon, Hudson and Poppy. Greg is also survived by his siblings: Ken Mahaffey and his wife Tammy with their family; Tracey Mahaffey-Keene and her husband Wayne with their family; Tanis Knuckles and her husband Kent with their family; Tasha and family. And many more family and close friends he considered family.
Greg is preceded in death by his mother and father Joan and Gary Mahaffey.
A memorial service will be held on July 18th, this Friday at Westview RV Park Center from 1:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of cut flowers, the family requests that potted plants be brought in remembrance. Unlike cut flowers, which wilt and are discarded, potted plants can thrive for months or even years, offering a continued source of comfort and a lasting symbol of the deceased's memory.
