George Begay, Sr.

GEORGE BEGAY SR. Funeral services for George Begay Sr. will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 22 at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at the Towaoc Cemetery. George was born Oct. 8, 1933, the son of Jimmy Begay and Marie (Slowman) Begay at the family home at the junction of the Mancos Creek and the San Juan River in Colorado. He passed away near Sapinero, Colo. on Monday, Oct. 18, 2004. George was 71 years old. George and his wife, Louise (Talk) Begay live in Towaoc, where he was employed as an assistant caretaker for the Resource Department. Together they raised eight children of their own and one adoptive daughter. George loved his family deeply and treasured his time spent with them. He was a good horseman and enjoyed farming and working as a ranch hand. He belonged to the Native American Church, Song and Dance group, and liked all Bear Dances. Surviving George are his wife, Louise Begay of Towaoc; his children, George Begay Jr. and wife, Tina of Grand Junction, Colo., Andy Begay Sr. and wife, Trina of Cortez, Edward Begay and wife, Lisa of Aneth, Utah, Leonard Begay and wife, Sarah of Bishop, Calif., Irma Begay of Towaoc, Lorraine Begay and husband, Eric Whyte of Mancos, Creek, N.M., Bonnie Begay and Tina Begay both of Towaoc, and his adoptive daughter, Dolly Talk and husband, Ramone of Shiprock, N.M. 25 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; sisters, Helen Topaha and husband, Robert and Lucy Dick and husband, Thomas all of Shiprock; and his brother, Phillip Begay and wife, Marie also of Shiprock, N.M. also survive George. His parents and one brother, Roy Begay preceded him in death.
