Florence Katheryn Hensley Daly was born October 23, 1924 in Cincinnati, OH to Harold F. and Nancy Ann Hensley. She passed away on March 10, 2021 at her residence in Dolores, CO at the age of 96.
The Hensley family moved to the Phoenix, AZ area when she was tow years of age where she remained until she left to attend Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, TX after graduating from Washington High School. Florence earned a License Practical Nursing from Wayland. She met and married Denver Arthur Daly while attending Wayland and working in the local hospital in Plainview. Denver was working in the polio ward at the hospital when he contracted a mild case of polio, Florence was one of the many nurses who worked in the hospital and took turns working with the polio patients. Denver was attending Wayland to become a teacher after recovering from polio. They were married in Phoenix, AZ on May 23, 1944.
Florence worked in local hospitals in West Texas while Denver taught school in West Texas. Florence changed professions when she decided the family needed the same hours and holidays. She started her teaching career in Kress, TX. Two years later the family moved to Cortez, CO where she taught at Mesa Elementary for several years. She continued her education at Adams State College during the summer months until she received her special education certification. She taught 20 plus years in the Dolores Elementary school before retiring in CO. She was asked to return to the classroom in Newcome, NM then to Dulce, NM. Florence spent more than 50 years total in the classroom.
The Daly home place seemed to have an open-door policy for children in the area that needed a place to stay for a few days or months. There were horses to ride, farm work to be done, and enough food to go around. If not enough beds, there was plenty of sleeping bags and floor space. If you were one of those, thank your parents for allowing you to come out here for the time needed to work through things at home. Think of all the birthday kisses you received from her; how much you protested when she went to smear the RED stuff on her lips, but how you wouldn’t have missed your turn for anything!
Surviving Florence are her children, Don A (Sabra) of Verde Valley, AZ, Judy C. of Dolores, CO, Larry E. (Terry) of Belen, NM, and Sue Ann (Richard) of Council, ID; eight grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and ten great great grandchildren; siblings, Georgia Bennet-Foster; Frank and Bruce Daly; and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Florence on June 18, 2021 at the Arriola Community Center. Please bring your good memories of Florence and Denver to share!
