EDITH INEZ CARTER

Edith Inez Carter, known as Inez, was born March 13, 1930 in Newby, Oklahoma. Inez was the second youngest of seven children. At the age of 15, she moved on her own to Kansas City, Missouri, where she worked for room and board. Inez married the love of her life, Merit R. Carter, in 1948 in Russell, Kansas. The couple was later blessed with two children, Ronald W. Carter and Lana L. Carter. One of the most memorable moments of Inez’s life was when she gave birth to Lana in a car!

The family moved out of Kansas in Aug. 1958, settling in the Montezuma Creek, Utah area on the Navajo Nation where Merit worked for Superior Oil Company. They spent three years in this remote location and eventually moved to Cortez, Colorado where Inez lived for the next 48 years.

While in Cortez, Inez worked at the Ramada Inn Restaurant, and volunteered more than 2,000 hours at the Colorado Welcome Center. The couple’s favorite activities included driving remote mountain roads, working in their backyard garden, and walking on the trails at the Cortez Centennial Park. Inez credits her long life to God’s grace and her daily walks!

Inez and Merit were married for nearly 60 years before his passing in 2007. In 2009, Inez moved to Florence, Colorado to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter. In Florence, she was a member of the Florence Senior Center and the First Southern Lifeway Baptist Church in Canon City and had many dear friends from both places. Inez was the Number One Colorado Rockies fan, following the team religiously!

Inez was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings; her husband, Merit; and her son, Ron. She is survived by her daughter, Lana Carter (Alan Ziff) of Penrose, Colo.; her grandchildren, Misty (Marvin) Coy of Cortez, Robert (Delia) Carter of Missouri, Richard Carter of California, Keegan Flaugh of Florida, Erin (Rod) Davidson of Florence, Colo., and Shannon Flaugh of Pennsylvania; and 18 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren (with one on the way).

A graveside service will take place on Friday January 19th, 2024 at 2 pm at the Cortez Cemetery. Friends and community members who knew and loved Inez are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Florence Senior Center, 100 Railroad St, Florence, CO 81226, or to Cañon City hospice: Sangre de Cristo Community Care, 601 Greenwood Avenue, Cañon City, Colorado 81212.
