March 29, 1955 — October 12, 2023

Cortez

Douglas K Ramsey passed away on October 12, 2023 surrounded by his loved ones after a long battle with cancer.

Doug was born March 29, 1955 in Arvada, Colorado to Harvey and Edna Ramsey (Higinbotham). Being raised in the city helped Doug to develop a drive and passion for Agriculture. This passion led him to Durango where Doug studied at Fort Lewis College. While in Durango, Doug met the love of his life and his future wife, Pamela Fellers. Doug and Pam followed each other to Colorado State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy in 1978. Doug and Pam were married at the Fort Lewis College chapel in May of 1977. They eventually moved to Pam’s family ranch in Breen, Colorado. They built a life breeding Navajo Churro sheep, raising their kids, and having amazing adventures together.  Doug and Pam remained on the family ranch until her passing in 2016.  At that time Doug moved to Cortez to be closer to his kids and grandkids.

Doug spent his career working in La Plata and Montezuma Counties for the USDA and NRCS completing over a million acres of soils surveys. Doug loved working and improving his farms in Hesperus and later in Cortez.  He enjoyed exploring with his jeep, camping, and finding hard to locate petroglyphs and ruins all over the West. Doug was a founding member of Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District and served as chief for several years. He remained active as a firefighter and EMT with Fort Lewis Mesa for over 20 years.

After Doug’s retirement from NRCS he worked as a Logistics Unit Leader on a Type 2 Incident Management Team, responding to wildland fires and natural disasters across the country. Doug’s attention to detail and ability to problem solve were invaluable to his team. After retirement Doug traveled many happy trails and had adventures from the Redwood Forests to Moab with his jeep and camper. In his last year Doug especially loved to watch the farm flourish and his Grandchildren grow.

Surviving Doug are his children Travis (Kelleen) Ramsey and Cassie (David) Robinson, along with his four Grandsons and his brother Steve Ramsey (Andrea).

Doug was preceded in death by his wife Pamela Ramsey and his parents Harvey and Edna Ramsey.
