The celebration of life for Cortez resident, Douglas Dee Mowrer, will be held at 11 am on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Doug Dee Mowrer, born on March 13th, 1942, in Ramah, New Mexico. Doug passed peacefully on April 30th, 2025. He was the youngest of four brothers and one sister to Clarence and Lucille Mowrer. Doug was a 1960 graduate of Gallup High School. He shared 55 years of marriage with his wife, Jean Mowrer. Doug served in the U.S. Army for six years, completing active-duty tours in both South Korea and Germany from 1960 to 1963. Doug transitioned to the Army Reserve in 1963 and was honorably discharged in 1966. He then worked for El Paso Natural Gas for 30 years as a plant operator and retired in 1996 at the age of 53. Doug was a knowledgeable outdoorsman and craftsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and backpacking across the United States. In his later years, he spent much of his time in his workshop, working on various projects while also dedicating time to preserving his historic orchard on his land in Dolores, Colorado. Doug always shared his expertise with those who showed an interest.
Doug is survived by his eldest brother Alan Mowrer, his wife, Jean Mowrer, three children, Karyne (Mike) Gangwer, Melanie Rose Rice, Douglas (Jovita) Mowrer, 24 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. Doug is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lucille Mowrer, his brothers, Gerald, Glen, and Ronny Mowrer; his older sister, Fannie Marie Mowrer; his eldest daughter, Sandra Finch; and his grandchild, Thomas Matthew Rice.
