Donnie Lin Leavell

After a lifetime of chasing bass and scouting the perfect hunting spot, Donnie Lin Leavell, of Cortez, Colorado, passed away peacefully at his home on February 6, 2026, at the age of 72. Donnie was a loyal friend, devoted husband, and loving father.

Born April 6, 1953, in Cortez to Merle Everett and Ruby Rae (Lewis) Leavell, Donnie grew up locally and graduated from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 1971. He met the love of his life, Judy, in Casper, Wyoming, and often said marrying her was the best decision he ever made.

Donnie spent his career in the oil and gas industry, beginning as a roustabout and later serving as General Field Superintendent for Triad-Western. He was known for his hands-on leadership, commitment to safety, and mentorship of others. He retired in 2021.

An avid outdoorsman, Donnie loved fishing McPhee Reservoir, hunting at first light, and sharing his passion for nature with his children and grandchildren. His legacy lives on through the traditions he created and the values he passed down. Donnie’s final fishing trip has taken him to calm waters, where he is surely reeling in the big one.

He is survived by his children Jennifer Leavell-Hermanns (Charles) of Cortez, Dusty Leavell (Angie) of Fernley, Nevada, and Mike Barner (Amber) of Cortez; his grandchildren Jake, Dalton, Brianna, Mark, Nathan, Isaac, Jenna, Alyssa, and Aspen; and great-grandchildren Aspynn, Knox, Kalias, Layla, Myles, Ayce, and Theo. He is also survived by numerous extended family members.

Donnie was preceded in death by his parents, Merle and Ruby Leavell; his wife, Judith Leavell; his brother, Richard Leavell; and his sister, Nona Carroll Linnens.

Donnie will be placed next to his wife at Cortez Cemetery, in a private inurnment ceremony. A Celebration of Donnie's Life will be held at a later date.
