David Nighteagle passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 29, 2025. A gifted storyteller, musician, photographer, and educator, David spent his life helping others connect to the land, the past, and the human spirit.
For many years, David served as an interpretive ranger at Mesa Verde National Park, where he shared the stories of the Ancestral Puebloan people with visitors from around the world. His passion for history, reverence for sacred places, and deep respect for Indigenous cultures made him a beloved presence on the trails and in the visitor center.
David honored the Lakota people and their traditions throughout his life, weaving their values of humility, courage, and gratitude into his music and message. As the founder of the Nighteagle Flute Company, he handcrafted traditional wooden flutes and performed original compositions that blended natural sounds, personal reflection, and cultural homage. His music invited listeners into stillness, memory, and healing.
He was a generous teacher, a loyal friend, and a man of conviction who found joy in quiet mornings, meaningful conversations, and the companionship of wild places.
