A Celebration of life for Dolores resident Danny Millard Higgins will be held on Thursday July 24, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lewis Arriola Community Center. Dinner will follow.
Danny was born on July 19, 1949, in Cortez CO the son of Millard and Joylene (Wilson) Higgins. Danny passed away on Sunday July 20, 2025, at the age of 76.
Danny grew up on a farm / ranch in this area. He graduated from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 1968. When he graduated from high school, he did various jobs around the area and then he went into logging. He married the love of his life LeAnn (Hindmarsh) on January 15, 1972. They had two boys, Heath and Allen. When he got out of logging, he started hauling cows and went into farming and ranching. Danny lost LeAnn in November of 2007 when she passed away due to cancer. His love for his Grandkids helped him continue on. He loved and was so proud of them! He was very active in their lives, attending dance recitals, ball games, school functions, and graduations. Once they were old enough, he was rarely seen without at least one of them. He loved riding in the mountains and working the sheep, goats, and cows with them. He rode from high mountains to low deserts and had a few dark nights coming down the trail. If you ask the Grandkids, they would say he yelled at them a lot. If you know Danny, you know he liked things done a certain way and might have gotten a little loud at times. Danny continued to manage the cows, do custom farming, and hauling until February of this year. At that point, Parkinson's disease limited his ability to fully carry out the things he loved to do. Even then, his fighting spirit would come out and you would see him walking across a field to check out one of the boy’s work; driving the side-by-side; or trying to block the gate from a cow trying to sneak through. He would confer with the grandkids to make sure things were being done exactly the way he wanted it done. He had a little informant, Keyan, who would report back if things were done differently than what “Granddad did”. The last few months were hard, but Danny fought until the end, surrounded by his family.
Surviving Danny are his children Heath Higgins (Rita) of Yellow Jacket, CO and Allen Higgins (Amanda) of Lewis, CO; by his grandchildren Lea, Cutter, Ryder, Makaya, and Keyan; his Mother Joylene Higgins of Dolores, CO; his brothers Steve (Cindy), Kenny (Judi), Darrell (Barbara), Doyle (Patricia), and Duane (Debra); his brother-in-law Keith Hindmarsh (Alesha); and numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
Danny was preceded in death by his loving wife LeAnn (Hindmarsh) Higgins, his father Millard Higgins, and his brother-in-law Kent Hindmarsh.
