Obituary

“Today, we gather to honor Breyer Betts, whose life was taken far too soon. He grew up in the Cortez area, and it was there that his love of adventure was rooted—something sparked early on in the canyons and hills around him. From a young age, he couldn’t be kept off a bike or skateboard. He had boundless energy, and his love for football shaped his early years. As he grew, his passion for extreme sports only grew stronger—he dove into mountain biking, river rafting, skydiving, dirt bike riding, especially snowboarding, and cliff jumping. He was a fearless thrill-seeker, a free spirit who could not be tamed, always pursuing the next challenge. Alongside that courage was an incredible generosity—he was the kind of person who gave without hesitation, whether it was the shirt off his back or even a bite of his sandwich; this was something witnessed by all who knew him. If you were close to Breyer, you knew that he always had your back, right or wrong, but this was also true for complete strangers—Breyer stood up for anyone who needed it. His life, full of daring and kindness, influenced everyone—he brought out the best in people and was always trying to help them become better versions of themselves. He had many struggles in life, but even through those struggles, he was always empathetic to others’ pain. He was deeply troubled by the suffering of others and the hard ways of this world. But toward the end of his life, he came to know God and developed a strong desire to deepen his faith and be closer to Jesus. He was always teaching others what he had learned, always including everyone in the fun. He set an example that showed every moment must be cherished, that life is short, and few loved as deeply as he did. This is a great and deep loss, one that will be felt by all of us. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jim Burnett and Beverly Burnett, his father, Brad Betts, and his grandmother, Gale Betts. He is survived by his grandmother Brenda Burnett, mother and stepdad Angel Morris and Luke Morris; his brother, Brandon Betts; his sisters, Emerald Betts and Teagan Suede Morris aunts and uncles and many loving cousins and close friends. Even though he is gone, his love is felt in every moment. We should all strive to live with the same passion and love that he showed every day. His spirit of adventure and selflessness will never be forgotten. We love you, Breyer.”
