BETTY DARLEIN BAUER

Longtime resident passes away.

Betty Darlein Bauer passed away on Feb 21 at Vista Grande nursing home at the age of 90. She was born in Colorado Springs on December 1, 1932.

Betty Darlein and her husband Charles moved to Cortez in 1958. She was a home maker until her children started kindergarten. At that time, there were no options for kindergarten as it didn’t exist in the Cortez public school system. So, she started a kindergarten that she operated for a number of years.

After closing that successful business, the two opened a clothing and jewelry store, Threads N Stones on Main Street which they operated until they retired.

Betty was later the director for the Ute Mountain Ute head start program and operated that for several years in Towaoc. After moving to a ranch in the country she and her husband enjoyed showing and caring for their miniature horses.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles E. Bauer, a longtime math teacher at MCHS.

She is survived by her 2 children and their spouses, Dr. Gerald Bauer and his wife Deborah, and Keith Bauer and his wife Carol.

She had 3 grandchildren and their spouses, Lauren Bauer and her husband Andy, Dr. Gregory Bauer and his wife Mary, and Kristen Pfohl and her husband Sam. At the time of her death, she had six great grandchildren: James, Eleanor, Thomas, Austin Charles and Adeline.

She has one surviving sibling Raymond from an original family of five children.

No service is planned at this time but a family celebration of life will be scheduled in the summer.
