Dolores, Colorado

Barbara Ann (Helstad) Swenson passed away peacefully, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of love that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.

Born on June 3, 1949, in Winona, Minnesota, Barbara was the beloved daughter of Norman and Pearl (Mark Norton) Helstad. Her early years were spent moving between Minneapolis, Minnesota and Blair, Wisconsin, where she attended grade school and formed lasting friendships that would shape her character throughout her life.

Barbara returned to her birthplace to complete her education, graduating from Winona High School in 1967. Her educational journey reflected the strong foundation of Midwestern values that would guide her throughout her life.

On a beautiful day in 1979, Barbara married the love of her life, Robert Swenson, in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Their union was built on mutual respect, shared dreams, and an enduring commitment that would sustain them though life’s many adventures together. Barbara lived her life with the enduring values of the Midwest-hard work, compassion, and an unwavering devotion to those that she loved. She possessed a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcome and cherished, touching countless lives with her generous spirit. This was especially evident during her years as a hostess at Winona Signatures Restaurant, where she became the beloved maternal figure to the wait staff, offering guidance, encouragement, and care that extended far beyond the workplace.

Barbara was preceeded in death by her husband Robert, her parents Norman and Pearl Helstad, stepmother Frances Helstad, and grandparents Nick and Sena Helstad of Blair, Wisconsin. She is lovingly remembered by her siblings Skip Norton, Donna Norton Peterson, and Susan Helstad Spaete; dear friends Krissy and Adrienne; and several nieces and nephews. Barbara’s love extended to her faithful companion, her dog Honey, as well as the beloved pets who preceded her.

Barbara’s memory will be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched with her kindness, her laughter, and her unwavering love.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a time and place to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, her family suggests making memorial contributions to a charity of your choice in Barbara’s honor.

Those we love never truly leave us. They live on in our hearts, our memories and in the love we share with others.”
