ALLEN COLES TOMPKINS Funeral services for Allen Coles Tompkins, a longtime resident of Mancos will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 10 at St. Barnabas of The Valley Episcopal Church. Reverend Erika Myer and Deacon Cindy Irvin will officiate. Interment will follow at the Summit Ridge Cemetery where military graveside services will be conducted. Allen was born the son of Samuel Coles Tompkins and Sarah Irene (Booth) Tompkins on March 28, 1914 in Holtville, Calif. Allen passed away at his home in Mancos on Monday, July 5, 2004 at the age of 90. On Nov. 23, 1941, Allen married Bette Jean Rogers. Within a year’s time, Allen enlisted in the U.S. Navy to serve his country. During his service Allen received medals for the Asiatic Pacific Theatre, American Theatre, Good Conduct, and Victory Medal. At the time of his separation from the Navy, Allen held the rank of Boatswains Mate First Class. Allen worked as a crane operator and was a member of the Operating Engineers Union. After his retirement, Allen and Bette moved to the Mancos area where he took up farming. He loved farming and all that went with it, including building fences. Allen was also a Master Mechanic. Surviving Allen are his beloved wife of 62 years, Bette Tompkins of Mancos; children, Violetta Hance and husband, Skip of Carson City, Calif., Susan Hickey and husband, Chuck of Fontana, Calif., Tom Tompkins and wife, Sue of Dolores, Sally Tompkins of Mancos, Roger Tompkins and wife, Cami of Atascadero, Calif.; 20 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; and his sister, Mary Wilson of Cortez. Allen’s son, Donald Tompkins; two sisters, Eleanor Tompkins and Louise Allen; three infant brothers; and infant grandson; and his parents preceded him in death. The family requests that in lieu of flowers or food, memorial contributions be made in memory of Allen Coles Tompkins with Hospice of Montezuma, 1345 S. Broadway, Cortez.
