Stuart Mclagan Porter

January 7, 1938 — April 6, 2020

Stuart McLagan Porter was born January 7, 1938 to Charles Thomas Porter and Alma Sonora Lewis Porter, in Lewis, CO (the town being named after his maternal grandfather) into a family of three older siblings, Richard Porter, John Porter, and Ardeth Porter (Ptolemy). He passed away on Monday, April 6, 2020 at his residence in Yellow Jacket at the age of 82.
After elementary school at Lewis-Arriola School he graduated from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 1956. Stuart served as a Sergeant in the US Army Corps of Engineers, in Germany, from 1959-1961, in supervision of liquid oxygen production for the Redstone Missile. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Colorado State University in 1963. He taught Biology at MCHS for several years, after which he worked with his father and brother, John, at the family business, Porter Farm Products. Heavy equipment operation and construction projects were his forte, as well as environmental remediation projects at Rocky Mountain Arsenal and Rocky Flats Plant. There was nothing he could not build or fix.
Stuart married Careen Carmichael Porter in 1961, and fathered Daniel Lewis Porter, and Cara Jo Porter Rieb. In 1985, he married Sharon Page Glaviano, and raised children Angela Glaviano Pletcher, and Lisa Glaviano Kapustka. Stuart and Sharon celebrated 35 years together in January.
Stuart embraced life, and had a profound love of nature. He climbed mountains, and loved to hike the canyons near his home in Yellow Jacket. Star-gazing was a favorite pastime. He looked forward to meteor showers, especially the Perseids every August, when sleeping outside was a joy with the children and grandchildren. His love for and identification of birds was apparent, and he built countless birdhouses to place on his land, and as gifts to others. Stuart was an avid reader, and developed a true interest in many subjects. Fishing was always a fun adventure, and trips to local lakes were plentiful. Crawdad fishing was a yearly event, followed by a feast. The most cherished part of his life was family; time with his grandchildren was especially joyful. He adored them all, appreciating and encouraging the uniqueness in each one.
Stuart leaves his wife, Sharon; his children, Daniel Lewis Porter (Paulette), Cara Jo Rieb (Dennis), Angela Pletcher (Matthew) of Sanford, FL, and Lisa Kapustka of Lincoln, NE; ten grandchildren: Noah Stuart Porter, Tessa Jo Porter, Dylan Porter Kapustka, Mackenzie Sharon Pletcher, Sidnie Don Majors, Rylee Faye Majors, Calvin Rieb, Kyra Rieb Dominquez, Krista Rieb Veloso, and Cody Rieb; and seven great-grandchildren. Stuart is also survived by his three siblings, Richard Porter, Ardy Ptolemy, and John Porter (Nancy); and his beloved nieces, nephews, and their extended families.
Stuart’s sense of humor and genuine outreach to others will always be remembered.
