Shirley Mae King

October 2, 1930 — January 3, 2012

Shirley King 1930-2011 Shirley Gibson King, a long-time resident of Durango, died at Vista Mesa Assisted Living Residence in Cortez, Colorado on January 3, 2012. She was born October 2, 1930, in Joliet, Montana to the late Lowell and Vera Grewell Gibson. She grew up on a ranch in Carbon County, Montana and graduated from Colorado Women's College in Denver, Colorado. In 1950, she married George A. King. In 1965 George and Shirley moved to Durango where George worked as an architect. For much of the last twenty years of her life she lived in Scottsdale, Arizona. Shirley King was a loving mother. She was active in the Durango Republican Party and volunteered for the United Way and Head Start. She was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Durango. She enjoyed fashion, skiing, and tennis. Shirley is survived by her four children, Susan Kurtenbach (Jerry) of Oak Park, IL; Judy Gillespie (Don) of Glenwood Spring, CO; Dr. Beth King of Brooklyn, NY; Glen King (Becky) of Durango, CO; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband George King and her sister Phyllis Gibson Howard. Private family services will be held for Shirley on Friday afternoon, Jan. 6 at Durango Faith Fellowship. Internment will take place at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.
