Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery. Visitation has been scheduled for Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. Marvin Emerald Noyes passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at the age of 94. Marvin was born at Anadarko, Okla. on September 20, 1917 to Earl Orlando and Julia Anna "Annie" (Ratliff) Noyes, one of seven children. He eventually worked his way out west where he met his wife Louella. In 1930 at age 13, Marvin's family moved from Oklahoma to Sedan, N.M. Because of the drought which caused the "dust bowl" they then moved in March 1937 to Cahone, Colo. where they raised beans. In 1938 the family moved to La Plata County. The farm they moved to was located west of Breen, Colo. to an area known as East Alkali Canyon. It was while they were living there that Marvin went with a friend to a dance at the Picnic Flat school house which is about 12 miles southeast of Breen where he met his young bride to be. Two years later Marvin married Louella June Eldridge at Aztec, N.M. on October 8, 1940. Jobs were scarce during this time so the honeymoon was short since the next day Marvin was scheduled to work where he was building on the new Vallecito Dam. They lived in a tent there until his job was completed. To this union seven children were born, Evelyn June Noyes of the family home of Lebanon; Eldon (Betty) Noyes of Lebanon; Oliver (Mary Ann) Noyes of Cortez; Lory (Sandie) Noyes of Fruita, Colo.; Darlene (Ed) Barber of Flora Vista, N.M.; Dan (Sheri) Noyes of Lebanon; and Lavona (Bob) Hansen of Lebanon. Marvin and Louella spent a few years of their early marriage in Sedan, N.M. area. In September 1946 they bought land in Cherry Creek, Colo. west of Durango. It has been told they arrived at their new home December 31, 1946 at 11:00 p.m. The very next day there was a foot of new snow. This was home for ten years. One of the different jobs Marvin did over the years was carpentering. It was during one of these jobs he learned of land for sale in the Lebanon area, north of Cortez. They did buy the land on November 16, 1956 and moved on December 1, 1956. This was the where Marvin called home for the rest of his life. In May 1958 Marvin was hired on with the Colorado Department of Highway with the engineering department out of the Durango office. He worked the southwest corner of Colorado to the New Mexico and Utah boundaries. He worked jobs in Telluride, Naturita, and his last big job was at Wolf Creek. He worked for the Highway Department until he retired 22 years later in May 1979. In 1959 Marvin was baptized into the Church of Christ and continued his beliefs he was raised with. Marvin loved to get together for gatherings of any sort. If there was any reason to have homemade ice cream he was right there to help with the cranking. He looked forward to the yearly picnics that were held at his Cherry Creek land. He enjoyed playing his guitar with anyone who was ready and would sing you a song if you asked him to. His wife would say it was a good thing she found him first before Nashville found him. He could play other instruments besides the guitar. Preceding Marvin in death were his parents, Earl and Annie Noyes; his brother, Emmett Noyes; his four sisters, Wanda Reed, Vivian Bush, Clara Robb and Ellen Moore. Two granddaughters, Debbie (Noyes) Mosher and Cristal Noyes preceded Marvin as well. Marvin is survived by one brother, Oceo (Beverly) Noyes of Aztec, N.M. Also surviving Marvin are Louella his wife for 71 years; his seven children and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He will be truly missed by so many friends and family far and near. Memorial contributions may be made in Marvin Noyes' name to the Lewis Arriola Community Center.
