Maria Audilia "Lela" Martinez

Maria Audilia Lela Martinez went to be with our Lord on October 17, 2017 in Boerne, TX. She was surrounded by loved ones and went peacefully without pain. Maria was born in Ensenada, NM to Manuel Valdez and Josefa Martinez Valdez on 8 July 1926. Maria was one of 10 children. She endured many hardships such as losing her father when she was only 5. Her family suffered greatly during the difficult depression years. Despite adversity, she grew into a strong and ever-positive woman. Lela married the love of her life, Jose Amado Martinez, in 1947. They made their home in Dolores for many years, only moving to Cortez after the McPhee reservoir project claimed their riverside home. To this union was born 5 children. Maria is survived by four children, Esther Fulmer of San Antonio, TX, Gail (Chuck) Montgomery of Monument, CO, Nelda Farrar of Cortez, CO and Joey (Debra) Martinez of San Antonio, TX; nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and several beloved nephews, nieces and cousins. Maria was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jose; infant daughter, Mary; her parents; and nine brothers and sisters. Family meant everything to Lela. She enjoyed crocheting and visiting with family and friends. Large gatherings were especially dear to her. The noisier the get-together, the happier she was. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Though we mourn her loss; we know she is at peace and no longer hampered by disease and ailment. Descanca in paz Mama. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 24 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery.
