Lois Lovett

February 19, 1931 — September 24, 2020

Lois Lovett was born February 19, 1931 the daughter of Frank and Mae Williams. She passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2020 in Grand Junction, CO. at the age of 89.
Lois was a true native of Colorado. She was born in a small tarpaper house by Rifle Creek, near Rifle, Colorado. Her father was a blacksmith for the U.S. Vanadium Company (now known as Union Carbide), and her mother loved being a telephone operator. When Lois was born her father was 51 years of age, and her mother was only 26. It was her parent’s only marriage and she became their only child. Lois’s parent’s married on February 8th, 1930, and she came into the world on February 19th, 1931. Lois nearly embarrassed her mother to death when she informed people that her parents were married on Feb. 8th, and she was born on Feb. 19th. Oops, she failed to mention the year.
Lois’s parents moved to Montana for several months then onto Uravan, Colorado when she was 3 years of age. Uravan became their home for the next 10 years. An interesting fact is that she was the first child to live in Uravan at that time. Her family decided to move to Grand Junction where she graduated from High School in 1949. After graduation Lois was hired as a secretary by the Grand Junction School District while she attended night school at Mesa Jr. College.

Lois travelled to Fayetteville, North Carolina at the young age of 19 to marry Herb Cole. From this union two children were born, her daughter Judy and son Tim.
June 5, 1956 in a tragic accident at work, Lois’s husband Herb was killed. With two children, no insurance, and $9.00 in her pocket she moved home with her parents. The next 12 years she continued to work hard for the School District and became the Director of Purchasing and Materials.
Her father died in 1958 and two years later her grandfather passed, so Lois’s mother, grandmother, 2 children, and herself lived together for the next 10 years. Lois was extremely busy for several years with Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, school activities, women’s and business organizations. She became president of The Junior Woman’s Club, Altrusa, Grand Junction’s Business Women, Grand Junction’s Chamber of Commerce, and Rocky Mountain School Business Officials Association.
A beautiful day in 1967 the manager of Independent Lumber called Lois to see if the school district was interested in his prices for purchasing lumber and materials for the school’s project. He ended up selling himself. Seven months later Lois married Emery Lovett and his four children Kathy, Johnny, Kevin and Billy. She was fortunate to be able to retire the next year.
Having worked most of her life she felt that she could manage working part time (another 8 years) for the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel writing a recipe column and wedding information, and becoming the head bookkeeper for Enstrom Candies. Emery & Lois decided in 1980 to move to Dolores, CO where she worked for ASA Welders Supply for the next four years. She finally decided to take retirement seriously and RETIRED.
Lois felt Dolores was truly her home. She always felt fortunate in the good things that had happened to her. She was so blessed to become a member of P.E.O. Chapter BD in Mancos, and Chapter EV in Cortez. She was thankful to have had so many wonderful sisters.
Lois’s greatest treasure was being married to Emery Lovett for 52 years. They were so blessed with 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Lois loved animals and would love any memorial contributions to be given to For Pets Sake, PO Box 1705, Cortez, CO 81321.
