Jerry Carl Hurst

April 12, 1941 — April 1, 2022

Graveside services for Mancos resident Jerry Carl Hurst will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2022 at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Mancos, CO. Pastor Marvin Graves will officiate. Visitation will take place from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 7, 2022 at Ertel Memorial Chapel.
Jerry was born April 12, 1941 to Junial and Ocie Hurst at the Hurst Ranch in Mancos, CO. He attended school in Mancos. Growing up Jerry also lived in Aztec, NM and eventually the family settled in Rico, CO.
It was in Rico that Jerry met and married his wife of 62 years, Leona Taylor (Nubby) on January 11, 1961. He was 19 and she was 16. They spent the early years in Rico where they had three children, Shane, Crystal, and Keith. During that time, Jerry worked in several mines in the Rico, Ouray, and Telluride areas. Jerry always loved the outdoors and the mountains. He spent his free time camping, riding in Pony Express Races, hunting, fishing, and riding horses and 4 wheelers. He especially loved it when lots of family members were able to join along.
In 1971, Jerry moved his family back to Mancos where he built their home by hand. (no electricity) He began working construction for Mountain Gravel with his brothers, Wayne and Boyd and running equipment for Corky Folman. He also worked at a sawmill for a time. He then went to work for CDOT. After he retired from CDOT, he bought and operated his own dump truck for several years. When he decided he’d had enough driving, he sold his truck and focused his attention on raising cows and ranching. And sometimes raising goats and pigs.
He loved riding mules in the mountains with his brother-in- law, Pat. They would often just take off for the day and ride. Jerry was devoted to his family and loved spending time with all of them, especially the grandkids and great grandkids.
“The gifts of an honorable, well-lived life are in those who will miss you once you’ve gone.” Jerry was a gift for us all and will be very missed.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Leona Hurst of Mancos, CO; his children, Shane Hurst(Lynn) of Mancos CO, and Crystal Hollingshead (Leif) of Cortez, CO; his grandchildren, Derick Hurst (Shay) of Mancos, CO, Gary Hurst (Jamie) of Mancos, CO. Kamber Box (Zac) of Loveland, CO, Niki Hurst Kramer of Mancos, CO, Marcie Fitzgerald (Keyan) of Dolores, CO, Jeff Hollingshead of Montrose CO, Melissa Stevens (Morgan) of Cortez, CO, Tiffany Cross (R.J.) of Dolores, CO, Cheyenne Martin (Joe) of Lewis, CO; his brother, Wayne Hurst (Arlene) of Mancos, CO; his sister, Bonna Clark (Pat) of Mancos, CO; and 25 great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Keith; and his brothers, Boyd Hurst and Tex Hurst.
