HARMON DALE MATHEWS Memorial services for Harmon Dale Mathews a lifelong resident of this area will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 18 at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Harmon was born September 18, 1916 in Hammon, Okla. the son of Chester and Ophie (Morrow) Mathews. He passed away Friday, July 14, 2006 at the Vista Grande Nursing Home of a short illness at the age of 89. On February 29, 1936 in Hammon, Okla., Harmon married Lorene Day in a double wedding with his cousin Finis Morrow. Harmon and Lorene moved to Idaho to work in the potato fields. They then moved to Los Lunas, N.M. and while there Doyle, their first son, was born. In 1938, the family was called back to Hammon, Okla. to farm. The couple’s sons, Marvin and Darell were born while in Oklahoma. Ranching and farming brought the family to Mancos in 1947. Harmon was injured in a hunting accident in 1950 and his sons were sent to Oklahoma to be cared for by grandparents. Harlene, Harmon’s only daughter was born in December of 1950. Harmon and Lorene had one more son, Alan who was born in Cortez in 1957. In 1977 the family moved to Cortez and Harmon semi-retired. In his spare time he loved hunting, fishing, attending family reunions and watching the Atlanta Braves. He will be missed by all of his friends and family. Surviving Harmon are his loving wife of 70 years, Lorene Mathews of Cortez; three sons, Doyle Mathews and wife, Alberta of Ordway, Colo., Darell Mathews and wife, Karen of Mancos, and Alan Mathews of Hesperia, Calif.; ten grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; four sisters, and one brother; and two daughters-in-law. Preceding Harmon in death were his parents; his daughter, Harlene Mathews; a son, Marvin Mathews; his brother; and one grandson.
