Florence Helen 'Bossy' 'Grammie' Mcewen

Florence Helen McEwen was born February 24, 1931 in Praire View, AR the daughter of Robert Lee and Willie Mae (Weatherton) Fox. She passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at Vista Grande Inn in Cortez at the age of 88.
Known by most as “Grammie” or “Bossy,” Florence loved her family, cooking, bingo, bowling, and the Dallas Cowboys.
Not known to talk your ear off, Florence’s words gave her the unfortunate nickname of “Bossy” at a young age. In response to her father, Robert, giving his four-year-old instruction Florence did not hesitate to inform Robert that she was not to be told what to do as she was the boss of the family. From that point forward the graceful and gentle Florence would be known by most by the unfitting name of Bossy, until she was given the name Grammie, which is who she was to all her grandkids, and many of the people who were impacted by her.
Not long after high school Florence followed her sister Gean to Montezuma County. Shortly after a young man caught Florence’s eye and in 1955 Florence married Ruben McEwen in Aztec, New Mexico. Florence and Ruben settled in Dolores, Colorado and began their family, which eventually developed into five beautiful children; Scotty, John, Coline, Ed, and Melonee. Florence loved her children dearly and was always active in their extra-curricular activities, however nothing made Florence’s eyes sparkle like her grandchildren. Grammie never missed her grandchildren’s activities and although she was small in stature, Grammie was her grandkids’ biggest fan.
Florence was an active member of the Montezuma County community. Florence was a member of the Emblem Club, Catholic Daughters, and her decades of supporting Dolores High School sports lead her to receive a life-time pass to all Dolores athletic events. One of only four lifetime passes ever given out. Florence held many positions in the community from manager of Cortez’s first Dairy Queen, she and Ruben owned several businesses, Florence was a Dolores pre-school teacher, and she worked many years for both Four Seasons Sports and Choice Building. Florence used her notable talent as a seamstress to create cheerleading outfits for young ladies, doing so without a pattern. She was also an avid bowler who played in many leagues and traveled to participate in bowling tournaments. Florence and her friends never missed Thursday night bingo at the Elks Club. As a devout sports fan she always stayed current on all Arkansas college teams and her vigor was always on full display when she was watching her beloved Dallas Cowboys.
Surviving Bossy are her children, John McEwen of Dolores, CO, Coline Lovett of Cortez, CO, Melonee Pettis of Menifee, CA; her grandchildren, Kelen Lovett (Jeni) of Dolores, CO, Keenen Lovett (Sarah) of Cortez, CO, Elijah and Nicolas Pettis of CA, Dawn Dorn of TX; her sister, Holly Schluterman of Ft. Smith, AR; her brother, Charles Fox of Durango, CO; and her great grandchildren, Summer and Jaclyn Lovett, and Dexter, Dylon and Danielle Dorn. Bossy was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Willie Fox; her spouse, Ruben McEwen; her sons, Scotty McEwen and Ed McEwen; her sisters, Mary Lee Kleck and Gean Nielson; and her brother, R.L. Fox.

Funeral services for Dolores resident Florence Helen “Bossy” “Grammie” McEwen will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Reverend Pat Valdez, C.R. will officiate. Interment will follow at Lebanon Cemetery.
