She was the second eldest of 5 children and the only daughter. She grew up in and around Bridgeport with her brothers and attended school there. On July 26, 1952 in Scottsbluff, Neb. Elsie married Harold L. Carlson. To this union one daughter was born. In 1959 the family moved to Cortez where Harold was employed with Superior Oil Company. Elsie worked as a homemaker and later was employed with Southwest Memorial Hospital from 1971 to 1986 as an assistant cook in the cafeteria. She retired in 1986. Elsie learned to bake with her Mother when she was young and always enjoyed baking. She would bake hundreds of cookies and other Swiss goodies at Christmas and make plates and deliver to her friend and relatives. Everyone looked forward to receiving these cookies because they were sooooo good! Her bread won several blue ribbons at the county fair. Elsie also learned to embroidery at young age from her mother. She continued this hobby through her life. She usually had a project of some kind from quilts, pictures, pillows and cases and lots of dish towels. Elsie gave her embroidered dish towels as gifts and if you happen to be a friend or someone she liked you would get a towel for Christmas. She gave away hundreds of towels over the years. Elsie also enjoyed gardening and grew several gardens. She took much pride in her vegetables, flowers and yard. Elsie was a member of the ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion for many years. Elsie was normally a quiet reserved lady but would surprise you with her wonderful dry wit with a wise crack that would make you smile. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends she made along the road of life. Elsie is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Sanders of Cortez; a step son, Leslie Carlson of Cortez; her step grandchildren, Michael Ford (Reggie) of Cortez, Cori Archuleta (Pat) of Clackamas, Ore. and Marcy Green (Rue) of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; and 7 step great grandchildren and 1 step great great grandchild.
