Edith L. Denton

January 20, 1922 — December 11, 2009

EDITH L. KOEHN DENTON Graveside services for lifelong Cortez resident Edith L. Koehn Denton will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 14 at Cortez Cemetery. Edith was born to Frank J. and Lola M. (Hawk) Koehn on January 20, 1922 in the Cortez area. She passed away on Friday, December 11, 2009 at Vista Grande Inn at the age of 87. Edith attended school in Lebanon, Arriola, Garrot Ridge and graduated from Cortez High School. She worked at the Cortez Theatre and J.C. Penny Co. as a cashier. When World War II came, Edith and a group of girl friends went to California where she worked for Douglas Aircraft for almost three years. She met Otis Denton there and they were married in Roswell, N.M. where he was stationed in the Air Force. When the war was over and Otis was discharged, they lived in Texas for a short time. They then moved to Cortez where their son, Darrel was born. Edith was a stay at home mom until Darrel started school. She then went to work in the county clerk's office as Recorder for almost 25 years. She and Otis were co-owners of Denton's Auto Supply. Edith was the bookkeeper until they retired. She was a member of the Methodist Church and an avid round and square dancer. Edith worked in their garden, canned vegetables and sewed most of their square dance clothes. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery, reading, cross word puzzles and helping her neighbors. Edith's biggest joy was being a grandmother. Surviving Edith are her son, Darrel Denton and wife, Mary Ellen; her granddaughters, Megan Denton Petty and husband, Jason and Amy Denton Lambert and husband, Steven; her great-grandchildren, Jack and Madeline; her sisters, Helen Kuenzler of Cortez and Frankie Bowers and husband, Bob of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Edith was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Otis Denton; by her parents, Frank and Lola Koehn; and by her sister, Erma McComb. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Scott McComb Memorial Scholarship Fund.
