EARL ALVIN GODFREY Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident Earl Alvin Godfrey will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery. Pastor Jonathan Bland will officiate. Earl was born the son of Delmer Robert and Mary Belle (Earle) Godfrey on February 4, 1927 in Spearman, Tex. He passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Vista Grande Inn at the age of 84. Earl served his country with the Merchant Marines. On April 20, 1947 Earl married Mary Marie Hoffman in Cortez. The couple shared 61 years of loving marriage before Mary's passing in 2008. Earl owned and operated his own backhoe service for 40 years. He was a hardworking, simple man who loved John Deere equipment and playing the harmonica. Surviving Earl are his sister, Lela Cook and husband, Johnny of Phoenix, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Earl was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife, Marie Godfrey; and by his siblings, Albert Godfrey, Buddy Godfrey, and Charlotte Stanley. Memorial contributions may be made in Earl's name to the National Parkinson's Foundation, 1501 NW 9th Avenue, Bob Hope Road, Miami, Fla. 33136.
