Albert Charles Bockhahn

March 1, 1945 — January 19, 2019

Albert Charles Bockhahn, 73, died on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at home in Ignacio, CO, after battling cancer. He passed peacefully, with the love of his family by his side and the melodies of his favorite Leonard Cohen songs in the air.
Born in Belle Fourche, SD, March 1, 1945, to Gayland George and Verneta Mae (Clark) Bockhahn, Al was raised in rural Montana and Wyoming where he learned to love nature at an early age. He spent many years in Stillwater, OK, Colorado Springs, Durango, and Ignacio, CO. Shaped by his upbringing and experiences in the Vietnam War, Al had a strongly individualistic approach to life. He was as headstrong as he was loveable with a heart of gold and passion for his beliefs. Spending time outside and listening to music were essential for Al. He loved gardening, planting trees, and, caring for Mother Earth and her inhabitants. He even played NPR for the seemingly perpetual brood of chickens he adored and cared for even after they stopped laying eggs.
Remaining gracious and fiercely independent to the end, including picking his obituary photo, Al was hesitant to share news of his battle with recurrent, metastatic cancer. No matter the challenges, he wanted to be remembered as a healthy, strong, and vibrant individual. Determined to make the most of his remaining time, Al relished moments with his children, grandchildren, friends and loved ones. Waking early to see the sunrise with his loving partner Alice, they would watch their favorite shows, like Morning Joe, and discuss current events over breakfast. And, often, over a second breakfast as well. Never missing an opportunity to help others in need, his can-do attitude ensured no obstacles were out of reach. His genuine smile, unique sense of humor, and positive outlook will never be forgotten. Always humble, Al wouldn’t believe the number of people who cared for him, nor the reach of his positive influence.
Al will be missed by partner Alice Webb; children, Tiponi Potts and fiancé, Scott Callantine, Maya Gossman and partner, Les Hara, and Clark Bockhahn and partner, Kara Pendl; former wife and mother of his children, Linda Feazle and husband Ron; grandchildren, Kaia, Tobias and Laila Gossman; and siblings, Marlys Indelicato, Gayland Bockhahn, Jr., and Gaylene Presher. Al was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doreen Backen; and brother, Dale Bockhahn.
The family would like to thank Mercy Hospice, especially Nurse Terri, for providing excellent, compassionate, end-of-life care. Al requested cremation and his wishes are being respected. We look forward to sharing stories and memories with loved ones at a Celebration of Al’s Life and ceremonial tree planting, to be held near Durango, CO. Details to be announced at a later date.
